How I spent Witching Week, (the period between Christmas and New Year that nobody knows what to do with,) and defending the right to be lazy. Recommendations for curating your own herbal bookshelf, and a tribute to the great Stephen Harrod Buhner.
I have felt a huge need to be mostly idle all week. Of course, I felt very guilty about it and have apologized for it repeatedly. Thank you for the welcome excuse to ponder and doodle give in to the artistic need to reflect.
I heard a phrase this week "There is no output without input." I truly feel that allowing ourselves time to indulge in the things we enjoy most makes us far more productive and creative in the long run - so go ahead and idle as much as you like! You have permission!!!
You are very welcome to share my statement here, Sarah. I'm happy to hear that these words echo the sentiments felt by other herbalists and those who feel a kinship with Nature that Stephen's books evoked or inspired. Many blessings on your endeavors for the new year - Athbhlain faoi mhaise agus faoi shéan dhuit
Thank you for graciously allowing me to share your words. I'm deeply saddened by Stephen's passing and felt a wave of despair at the lack of acknowledgement for his work which has had such a profound impact on me. It was a wonderful relief to read your compassionate words. Although I never met Stephen, his books have been firm companions, and there really is nobody else like him to take up the mantle. Go well, and I hope you will heal from your loss and carry his spirit within you 🙏
It is us and those who come along this path behind us, Sarah, that will do so, just as we always have. The landscape carries the dreams and actions of our ancestors just as it carries the knowledge of the medicine hidden within its glens, valleys, deserts, and mountains.

I'll take it. Thank you.
